USP Big Sandy: Rules for Sending Pictures to Inmates

Successfully sending pictures to inmates at United States Penitentiary Big Sandy (USP Big Sandy) means following all the rules. If you do not follow the rules, your pictures will be returned to you, and your loved one will never get to see them.

USP Big Sandy Basics

USP Big Sandy is a high-security federal prison with an attached minimum-security camp on the same property. Men housed in the high-security prison are considered high-security risks or are convicted of severe and violent crimes.

The prison is in eastern Kentucky, about 133 miles from Lexington and 140 miles from Frankfort. It is near the city of Inez in Martin County. It is not far from West Virginia. The prison is just off State Route 3 – Prestonburg Road.

• Charles McArther Emmanuel, son of former Liberian dictator Charles Taylor.
• Kodak Black, who was pardoned by President Trump.
• El Sayyid Nosair, an Egyptian-born US citizen linked to a plot to bomb landmarks in New York City. He also admitted to killing Meir Kahane, an Israeli politician.

Rules for Sending Pictures to USP Big Sandy

The only way to send pictures to your loved one at Big Sandy in the main prison or the camp is through the mail. You cannot hand pictures to someone when you are there for an in-person visit.

A list of some important local rules are:

• Mail must be sent to the Post Office Box, not the street address.

If you do not know the inmate’s register number, you can look it up at the Federal Bureau of Prisons website.

Some rules for every federal prison are:

• The staff looks at all the mail. People you do not know will decide if your pictures are allowed in the prison.
• The warden has the final say on whether or not a picture is allowed. If the warden says no, the pic is returned to you.
• Pictures that represent a threat of any kind to the facility or the people there will be rejected.
