If you want to send pictures to inmates at USP Atwater, then consider Inmate Photos. All we do is send pictures to inmates in more than 6,000 correctional facilities across the nation.

Because this is all we do, we know what each prison requires. We know how to package your pictures so they will get to that important person in prison.

The History of USP Atwater

United States Penitentiary (USP) Atwater is in Merced County, CA. The prison is northeast of the City of Atwater, on the other side of the airport from the city. The nearest major road is California Route 99, several miles south of the prison. The prison is about 30 miles southeast of Modesto and 130 miles from San Francisco. The prison compound is located on part of the now-closed Castle Air Force Base.

The physical address is:

1 Federal Way
Atwater, CA 95301

This high-security federal penitentiary opened in 2001, and in August of 2021, it housed 866 men.

Some of the inmates here are serving life sentences for violent crimes. The adjacent satellite facility houses 99 men in a minimum-security setting.

One of the more notable inmates at USP Atwater is Jerry Whitworth, eligible for parole in March 2195. He was convicted of selling classified information to the Soviet Union.

Mail Rules

Like all federal prisons, USP Atwater has mail rules for the inmates and people sending mail. Some of the rules are for every federal prison in the nation, and some rules are specific to USP Atwater. You must know both sets of regulations to properly send pictures to an important person at the prison.

Some of the rules are:

  • The prison encourages family and friends to send mail to inmates.
  • Pictures cannot show any nudity or sexual content.
  • Pictures cannot show violence, gang activity or gang-related symbols.
  • Pictures cannot represent a threat to the security of the facility or to the inmate’s safety.
  • The USP Atwater administration has the right to determine if a picture violates the rules.
  • The prison staff opens all inmate mail and inspects it. Any contraband is destroyed. Any inappropriate pictures are either destroyed or returned to the sender.

Inmate Photos knows the rules. We work hard to keep our rules list updated. When you use our service to send pictures, we ensure you get a copy of the rules. You review those regulations and decide if your pictures will pass the inspection.

Where Inmates Keep Their Photos

Inmates may buy a photo album from the prison commissary to store pictures. The store has a small and a medium album. Refill pages for the album are also available from the store.

Inmates at USP Atwater do not have access to email to receive pictures. You must mail pictures to the inmate at the prison using the Post Office. Inmates at USP Atwater can have an MP3 player but will not display images.

Inmates at the USP have a locker they may store pictures in. Pictures cannot be taped or glued to the walls. If this happens, the pictures can be confiscated for seven days or until the inmate proves he can follow the rules. Pictures may be taped to the inside of the locker.

Inmates at the satellite campus may have one picture no bigger than an 8×10″ in a frame, which they can place on their locker. Otherwise, rules for pictures are the same as for the main campus.

Pictures are considered an inmate’s personal property. While some property may be taken away for disciplinary reasons, the inmate always gets their photos back.
