When a loved one is behind bars, they are separated from those who are most important to them. It doesn’t mean they are unreachable, however. There are ways you can still include them in family gatherings and events. Even though they can’t be there in person, you can include them in your life by sending them pictures and postcards. In order to make sure they get the items you send, you must know the rules of the facility and follow them to the letter.
Clark County Detention Center’s History
The first Clark County jail was built over 160 years ago and had ten cells. Today, the number of cells in the Clark County Detention Center has increased dramatically and the facility offers many state-of-the-art amenities that allow at least a few minor comforts. How to Send Photos and Postcards to Inmates at Clark County Detention Center

Following the Rules
Every jail, prison, or detention center has very strict rules about what inmates can receive from their friends and family on the outside. Understanding and following these rules and protocols will ensure that your loved ones will always get the items you send to them.
- No pornographic, nude/partially nude, sexually explicit, or obscene photographs or literature
- Photographs can’t be altered physically by stapling, taping, gluing or attached to one another
- No self-addressed envelopes
- No blank stationery, envelopes, or cards with or without glitter
- No un-canceled stamps
- Photos and cards cannot exceed 6 by 8 inches
- No more than 15 photos can be sent at one time
- No gang-related photos
- No hard-cover books
- No written publication unless sent directly from the publishing company
- Cards cannot be marked with glitter, white-out, crayons, or any other type of unknown medium
- It is up to the jails’ discretion if something appears to be hazardous to the health and the security of the inmates
- No packages can be mailed to the inmate with prior approval
If you have any questions about what is acceptable or allowed by CCDC, call and talk to the mail staff at the facility. They will be able to guide you through the process and provide you with all of the information you need to properly mail a variety of items to your loved ones who are spending time in the CCDC facility.
Keeping Their Photos Safe
Inmates who receive photos from family and friends on the outside need a place to protect them. They do not have access to emails or other forms of digital storage, so they need to use a more traditional form of storage. Photos must be sent to the inmate using the United States Postal Service and then pass through the mail area at the detention center.
Once the inmates receive their photos and postcards, they have the option to store them in a personal locker. Inmates cannot glue or tape pictures to the wall. One of the best ways for inmates to store their pictures is to purchase a small or medium-sized photo album from the commissary. Refill pages can also be purchased when the inmate begins to run out of room.
