USP Atlanta is a medium-security men’s prison with an adjacent minimum security satellite camp and a detention center. In August of 2021, the population of the prison was 1,088, with 991 in the main prison and the detention center and 97 in the camp.
The detention center houses inmates held for trials, pretrial actions, and men waiting for bed space in the main prison or another federal prison.
The compound started in 1899 when President William McKinley authorized construction. It opened in 1902. In the 1980s, it was used to house Cuban refugees during the Mariel Boatlift. Whitey Bulger, Al Capone, Eugene Debs, and Willie Aikens are some of the more famous people who served time at the prison.

It is about a little over a mile south of Interstate 20 and a little over a mile east of Interstate 85. It is about a mile south of Zoo Atlanta.
If you are sending mail, like pictures and photographs, to an inmate at the federal prison, you have to use the right address and include the inmate’s name and federal prisoner identification number. The Post Office Box for each facility is the same, but you must add “Satellite Camp” if the person you are sending mail to is housed at that facility. If you get the address wrong, the inmate may not get the pictures you send.
If you are sending pictures to someone at USP Atlanta, you must know the rules. The federal government has rules each federal prison must follow. At the same time, each prison has its own set of rules added to the federal regulations. You have to know both sets of regulations.

A few of the regulations for pictures sent to someone at USP Atlanta are:
Inmates housed at the detention center waiting for transport to another facility have the same mail rights as someone housed in the main prison. However, the inmate in the detention center may be moved to another center at any time. Inmate Photos recommends waiting until that important person is moved to a more permanent location before mailing pictures.
Pictures must be stored in the inmate’s locker. Inmates are allowed to keep pictures in a photo album which they must buy from the commissary. If they fill up the pages in the album, they can order a refill from the commissary.
Inmates at USP Atlanta do not have access to email to receive images. All pictures must be sent via U.S. mail.
