NORTH KERN STATE PRISON

North Kern State Prison is a medium-security prison with a minimum support facility on the same campus. The minimum support facility houses a Level 1 firehouse. It opened in 1993.

It is a reception unit where inmates are held for up to 90s days while staff classifies them for placement into one of California’s state prisons. The facility also serves as the Central-Southern California transportation hub for the California Department of Corrections.

Located just outside Delano, it is a few miles north of Bakersfield, just off California Highway 99. Kern Valley State Prison is a maximum security facility that houses inmates long-term; it is about a mile away. The two facilities give Kern County, CA, one of the highest state inmate populations of any county in the U.S. The two prisons have greatly spurred economic development in Delano.

Pictures cannot be sent to the street address. They must go to the prison’s Post Office box (see below).

You also need to include the inmate’s name and their CDCR#.

Since North Kern State Prison is a temporary prison, you may worry your pictures will not get delivered. Do not worry. Inmate mail is forwarded from the facility. Inmates in California state prisons are allowed to have tablets. Tablets must connect to a prison kiosk to download anything. Incoming messages have a fee attached to them and this includes pictures. Once received, inmates have to pay to print the pictures on plain paper using low-quality black and white or color ink.

When the inmate leaves North Kern State Prison, unless he or a family member buys the tablet, it stays behind and everything is erased. That means you have to send the pictures again and he must pay again to get the images.
