FCI Ashland is located in Boyd County, KY, about five miles southwest of Ashland, just off U.S. Highway 60 and State Road 716, also called Bybee Road. It is on the very eastern edge of the Bluegrass State. It is about two and a half hours southeast of Cincinnati.
It is a low-security facility for men serving short-term sentences or who are close to completing their sentences. It has a satellite camp. Forbes magazine ranked the satellite camp as one of the best places in the nation to serve a federal prison sentence.
The man prison holds 827 inmates, and the camp holds another 158. It opened in 1940.

Inmates at FCI Ashland can buy photo albums from the commissary to keep pictures. Any pictures must fit in the album sheets and be held in place there. A photo album purchased through the commissary costs about as much as one bought outside prison.
A picture frame is allowed to display a photo. One may be kept on top of the inmate’s locker. Otherwise, the framed photos must be in the locker.
Inmates at FCI Ashland do not have regular access to email. They do have access to an electronic message system. It has a per-minute charge. Also, only messages may be sent with this system. Attachments, like pictures, are not allowed.
