History of the Dodge Correctional Institution in Wisconsin
Dodge Correctional Institution is a maximum-security correctional facility that was converted from the Central State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in 1977. The facility first opened as a correctional facility on May 15, 1978, when the first two inmates were transferred from another location, which was the Waupun Correctional Facility. Ground was then broken on October 29, 1993, for a $45 million expansion of the facility. The completed expansion more than doubled the size of the Dodge Correctional Institution.
The correctional facility originally housed only males. The first female was accepted into the Dodge Correctional Facility on June 17, 1996. The admission of females made the institution the only reception center for both male inmates and female inmates who were committed to the Department of Corrections.
The Dodge Correctional Facility transferred all of its female inmates to the Taycheedah Correctional Institution on December 1, 2004. Today, only male inmates remain at the facility. The institution serves as the central medical center. It provides both inpatient care and outpatient care for the male inmates who are housed at the Dodge Correctional Facility.
