The North Tower was constructed in 1993 after former sheriffs requested that additional jail space be added, and as the “population of the jail worsened” over the decades leading up to the 1990s. The ultramodern facility is a far cry from the first jail, which was a 16’ x 16’ cedar log structure, built around 1850.
